Article history: Received on: 26/01/2013 Revised on: 19/02/2013 Accepted on: 04/03/2013 Available online: 30/03/2013 The present study aims to investigate the antidiabetic activity of roots of Cayratia trifolia (L.) Domin in alloxan induced diabetic rats. Phytochemical studies showed the presence of steroids, flavonoids and alkaloids in petroleum ether, ethyl acetate and ethanol extracts, respectively. Antidiabetic activity was evaluated by observing blood glucose levels and analyzing the serum biochemical parameters after dosing the ethyl acetate extract. Blood samples were collected from overnight fasted diabetic rats on 5, 10 and 15 days of treatment to determine blood glucose levels. On day 16, blood samples were collected to estimate the biochemical parameters. In diabetic rats, both the doses (200 mg/kg and 400 mg/kg) of ethyl acetate extract were found to be significant (P<0.05) when compared with control and favourable changes in biochemical parameters were also observed. It can be concluded from the study that the ethyl acetate extract of roots of C. trifolia possess potent antidiabetic activity.

Cayratia trifolia (Linn.) Domin (Vitaceae) is a perennial climber, commonly known as fox grape in English, Amalbel, Ramchana in Hindi and Amlavetash in Sanskrit, found in India, Asia and Australia. The infusion of seeds along with extract of tubers is used traditionally for the treatment of diabetes. Whole plant is used as diuretic, in tremors and splenopathy. It is reported to possess antivira...

Background: Medicinal plants with biologically active components such as antioxidant and antidiabetic are useful sources of novel therapeutics. In Iran, traditionally believed that the aqueous extract of berberry fruit (Berberis integerima F.) improved health, especially in people with diabetes. Objective: In this study, in vitro phytochemical and antioxidant activities of B. integerrima and...
متن کاملEvaluation of gastric anti-ulcer activity of methanolic extract of Cayratia trifolia in experimental animals
Peptic ulcer disease is a serious gastrointestinal disorder[1]. The formation of peptic ulcers depends on the presence of acid and peptic activity in gastric juice plus a breakdown in mucosal defenses. There are two major factors that can disrupt the mucosal resistance to injury: non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) e.g. aspirin and Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection[2]. As a ma...

The antidiabetic activity of Balanites roxburghii was carried out in normal and alloxan-induced diabetic rats. Oral administration of methanolic extract of kernals (0.1 and 0.3g/kg body weight) significantly lowered the blood glucose levels. The activity can be attributed to reducing the intestinal absorption of glucose. The activity reported was dose-dependent.

Pancreatic β-cells dysfunction and impairment of insulin action usually leads to hyperglycemia. Punica granatum L. is a well-known traditional herbal remedy in Iran due to its positive effects on ameliorating blood glucose homeostasis. In this study, we aimed to investigate and compare the pomegranate fruits aqueous extract (PE) on glucose and lipid metabolisms in normal and Alloxan-induced dia...
